Day Four Review

Day 4 offered some of the busiest activity for the week, with Mixed, Boys and Girls doubles draws played to semi-finals.  There were 32 mixed pairs, 16 girls pairs and 38 boys pairs.

Unlike with the singles there were numerous upsets for seeded players.  In some cases tiredness had clearly set in.

Match of the day was a plate semi-final match, which went to 20-18 in the fifth set, won by Jacob Yoon and Kevin Lee.

Most of the usual suspects will appear on finals day, including 2015 singles winners Nathan Xu and Grace Qin.

The girls doubles semis on Friday at 10.30 feature an all Mount Maunganui matchup, while the boys semis contain 3 Auckland teams and the lone Otumoetai finalists, Drew Tilsley and Alex Freeman.  Mixed doubles has two Somerville pairings battling it out, with Pinehurst and Mount Maunganui on the other side.

The action starts from 9am, commencing with the boys and girls teams finals and bronze play-offs.

Final prize-giving will be around 2pm.

The menu for Day 3 of AIMS table tennis was singles.  The draws contained 90 boys and 37 girls, making it a very busy day indeed.  The overall theme was the dominance of the Auckland based players, many of whom play in regular schools competition.

The semi-finalists in both boys and girls were accurate to seedings.  On Friday, last year's singles winner, Nathan Xu will meet his Wairau Intermediate compatriot, Yu Yang Sun in one semi-final, while the other will be contesed by Takapuna's Gavin Ding and David Dahai Guo from Remuera Intermediate.

In the girls event, Pinehurst School 2015 winner Grace Qin will face Annie Chen from Somerville.  Annie had to work very hard for her place, defeating her very disappointed team-mate Amelia Loh after saving several match-points in the fifth set of their quarter-final.  This just had to be the match of the day!

In the other semi-final, Mount Maunganui's Marielle Dulangon will face 2015 entrant Deija Vukona from Te Puna School in an all Bay of Plenty contest.

The boys consolation event was fittingly won by another Te Puna player, Korbin Marshall, after he missed out in a 3 way tied for main draw qualification.  Otumoetai returnee, Paige Holloway-Angell took out the girl's consolation event.

Five of the six alloted rounds of pool play for teams were completed on opening day.  It was great to see all 32 teams getting on with their matches and displaying good behaviour and sportsmanship.

There were few upsets on opening day, but one notable result was the 3-2 victory by Somerville Intermediate over the more favoured Otumoetai 1 in pool D. Drew Tilsey and Alex Freeman took the latter into a lead with singles victories, but Somerville, lead by the impressive Hao Sha, took both doubles to take out the match.

Top seeds Wairau Intermediate, lead by Nathan Xu, with support from Yu Yang Sun and Thomas Liang, and Takapuna Intermediate (Gavin Ding, Sunny Ang and Daniel Ottenhoff) won all four rounds 5-0. Bucklands Beach (Abhinav Chawla, Ray Wang and Heymans Lo) despatched Palmerston  North Boys, featuring Callum McKinnon and Kaushal Patel, with unexpected ease and look likely to win pool C on Tuesday. Ray Wang excelled with his upset 5 set win over Kaushal Patel,

Tauranga Intermediate, lead by Rhys Newbury looks likely to progress to quarters in pool B, while Te Puna, lead by Aston Monk and Korbin Marshall has excelled in pool A.

Spare a thought for wee Sulav Karmacharya from Papamoa who lost 17-15 in the third and then 11-13 in the fifth to Jacob Yoon from Tauranga Intermediate.

In the girls draw the matches have generally been much closer.  Mount Maunganui Intermediate, lead by a dominant Marielle Dulangon, supported by Charla Dougal and Ruby Barnes, is unbeaten in pool A, and Somerville Intermediate, featuring Annie Chen and Amelia Loh is unbeaten in pool B.

Te Puna will fancy their chances of making the semis, with Chelsea Garner's hard-fought victory over Aarohi Karandikar making Somerville fight for their win, and she and Deija Vukona remain unbeaten in singles.  Tauranga Intermediate also looks likely to progress, with Shakira Cable and Holly Ramsden impressing.

Tauranga and TTNZ welcome you to join us for a 9 day table tennis extravaganza, commencing Monday 5th September, and finishing with day 2 of the Bay of Plenty Open on Sunday 11th September.

During AIMS week we will have outdoor tables set up at the Cricket Grandstand at Blake Park, and in the Mount Mainstreet Phoenix Carpark for people to enjoy between and after their other activities.

We currently have 127 AIMS players entered overall, and 23 boys teams and 9 girls teams confirmed for the teams event.

A Schoolteacher Coaching course will be conducted on Tuesday evening, and is ideal training for someone to foster organised table tennis in a school environment.  We hope that several of the managers and coaches (or teachers in charge) of AIMS teams will be keen to participate.

AIMS Referee, Ron Garrett, will be running an Umpiring Course on Wednesday evening, 7th September, with attendees able to complete practical requirements at AIMS Games finals day or at the Bay of Plenty Open.

Both events will be run by the Tournament Planner computer programme, which we intend to use for online tournament entries in 2017.  Anyone wishing to familiarise themself with this multi-featured program can approach Tournament Director, John Lea for more information.  Please also contact John via [email protected] to register your interest in the coaching and umpiring courses.

We hope that a number of AIMS players, and some of their adult supporters will enter the Bay of Plenty Open, which commences at 9am on Saturday 10th September with a Generation Doubles fun event (typically the most popular event on the programme!).
