SNZ APPOINTS JASON MERRETT AS CEO

Softball New Zealand (SNZ) is delighted to announce the appointment of Jason Merrett as its new Chief Executive Officer to lead the sport into what promises to be an exciting new era for the sport in Aotearoa.

With a strong background in sports, education, and administration, Merrett brings with him valuable experience in the sports sector where he has served as a physical education teacher before transitioning into leadership roles in sport and recreation.

Merrett will be joining Softball New Zealand from Sport Canterbury where he has been the General Manager leading the development of the organisation's vision - Kia Nui Ake, Kia Kaha Ake, Te Tokomaha Ake (more people, more active, more often). While at Sport Canterbury, Merrett was seconded to the Regional Sports Trust Network where he was responsible for the implementation of the Sport New Zealand programme of work, Strengthen and Adapt.

His contribution to sport and strong track-record in delivering strategic initiatives was recognised by Sport New Zealand in 2022 when he was identified as a Future Leader of the sports sector as part of the New Zealand Sport and Recreation awards.

Merrett holds a Masters in Business Administration, further enhancing his ability to drive strategic initiatives and organisational growth. His diverse skill set, coupled with his dedication to fostering excellence in sports, makes him an ideal choice to lead Softball New Zealand.

"I am honoured to be appointed as the CEO of Softball New Zealand," said Jason Merrett.

"Softball holds a special place in the hearts of many New Zealanders, and I am committed to working tirelessly to enhance the sport's profile, participation, and success at all levels.

“I’m excited to get around the country and meet all of the incredible people that form the backbone of this whānau-centric sport and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into delivering SNZ’s strategic plan to enhance softball at both a community and high performance level.”

Softball New Zealand looks forward to Jason's leadership and vision as the organisation continues its mission to promote and develop softball throughout the country.

SNZ Board Chair, Hoani Lambert said: “I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to our Board Member, Vaughan Dennison, who has so seamlessly slotted in as our Interim CEO while we’ve undertaken a robust recruitment process to recruit our next CEO who will drive our sport forward.

“Jason’s experience as an athlete, physical education teacher and sports administrator, particularly with successfully delivering Strengthen and Adapt will be hugely beneficial as he connects with Sport New Zealand to deliver the programme of work across the country for softball.

“I’m very much looking forward to working with Jason to propel softball forward in Aotearoa as we look to enhance and grow our sport and would like to warmly welcome him and his whānau into the softball family.”

Merrett will join members at the upcoming Softball New Zealand Annual Conference in May. He commences in the role from 6 May 2024
