Weekly Newsletter

A new public holiday brought Friday footy back to Campbell Park as we welcomed the University Rugby Club to town. Two close games played in front of a good crowd which could enjoy some good weather. The Bowers Concrete B side had a close match going down 12 – 8, they controlled the second half but just couldn’t land the final punch to take the win. Club legend Josh Janmaat made his debut at tight head prop in the match which raised a few eye brows but he accounted for a solid first half before old age forced him off.

The Nottingham Castle A’s were blown away in the first half by University who scored some excellent tries by getting into the wider channels with some young and talents players. At halftime the strategy from Morrinsville was to tighten the game up and take it to University through the forwards which proved to be a coaching master stroke. The boys fought back scoring good tries to trail 24 – 21 with only 15 minutes to go, similar to the B’s match they were just unable to capitalise on opportunities to score again and put the game to bed. With only five minutes to go University scored an intercept try and that was the match. Big mention to young Brayden Oakes, a player from our colts team who came on at half time to play left wing and really made an impact with strong carries and solid defence. The Koro of the team Dwayne Sweeney showed his class throughout the match, the balance this man has in contact is unbelievable and he earned player of the day.

Now the Premier A side play in a bottom four knock out series to confirm ranking for 7 – 10th with the 10th place team at the end playing Southern United who finished top of the first round of Division 1. This week the A’s will travel to take on United Matamata Sports in Matamata, this writer knows the boys focus for this week being our local derby but also how the result during pool play went. We invite any supporters, sponsors and ex-players to come down to training tonight from around 7.30 to watch the end of training and share a beer with our men before the weekend. Obviously we want to get as many supporters to Matamata for kick off at 2.45pm on Saturday!

In other results, Fraser Tech defaulted to the Dempsey Wood Under 85 which sees our side move to the next round of the NZ Barbarian Cup. The Anderson St Colts had a close fought match against Pirongia which they won 24 – 22, the boys are now into their second round so keep an eye on where their matches are over the coming weeks to see the up and coming Morrinsville talent.

This weekend our U85s will be celebrating the 100th Game for Gary Mills so be sure to stick around the club rooms after the game to celebrate this huge achievement with Gary and his family, another great club man and something to be proud of!

Last week was the first game in the new round for our teams, MRSC Whai Repo once again showed they deserve to be at the top of the table with a big win against the Cooper Aitken team who played really well. MRSC Hot Shots also showed their teamwork and outstanding defense against Morrinsville College with a convincing win. MRSC Gals showed great consistency and steady play in their win over the Morrinsville U14 Rep team. MRSC Red had a hard fought draw with Kereone Krew, MRSC Blue had a close win over Kereone Ball Busters and MRSC Stars worked hard in their game against Kereone Legacy Stars coming within 4 goals but not getting their. Our teams are all playing fast paced exciting netball and we would love to see some support - Thursday nights from 6.30 pm.

Coaches Update - U21 Colts.

We have a coaching Group of four, Roger Wilton, Bruce Wilton, Glenn Metcalfe and Jamie Gifkins our managers are Brian Caulfield and Brett Johnstone.

We have played and won the last game of the first round in Pirongia last Saturday. There are 10 Colts teams this year and it looks as though MS Colts will be in 6th position and therefore we will play in the bottom Division for the second round.  We have a mixture of players from last year and a majority of new younger players for this year.  As usual, we struggle to fill the Prop positions in the team and we have had to play uncontested scrums on a number of occasions. This season we developed Player of the week scheme In addition, with help from the Club, Business and parental support we purchase a $100 gift voucher, which is awarded, to our player of the week. POW must have had to attend both trainings during the week and of course played.

Special mention must go to the Club for development of the Colts changing room.  And our 3 main sponsors Anderson Panel and paint, Mitsubishi Morrinsville and Greenville Auto painters.
