NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

15th August 2022

Wasn't it great to have the sun back out in Nelson for Rugby over the weekend. We had teams playing all over the region and some really good results. The 1st XV managed to win over Christchurch Boys' High School to book their place in the Miles Toyota Championship Final on Saturday. Our U17 Oxford team is off to Blenheim to play in the U17 grade final, while our U14 Argentina and U15 Kahurangi teams are both hosting their respective finals. It is going to be a big day for all these teams this Saturday and congratulations for this achievement. We wish you all the best!

New Flags

A big thank you to these people for gifting the new flags sitting on the driveway above the front field to the college. Jason Kilworth at New Zealand Lifebrokers, Fermin & Nicola Padilla at Speedy Signs Nelson & Lee Babe and Jo Neale from Homes By Orange. They look fantastic and have been getting lots of positive comments. Much appreciated.

1st XV Report

The 1st XV played their Miles Toyota Championship Semi Final against Christchurch Boys' High School (CBHS) 1st XV at home on Saturday. It was a great day and the team had prepared well. With the chance to play in a third final in 4 years and also defending the Trust Bank Cup, the team were in no mood to lose. They got off to a great start with Callum Robertson scoring a try before CBHS scored one of their own which they converted. Nelson scored again with Zyon Ford crossing in the corner and the teams went into the half 10 all. Nelson took control of the second half scoring 3 more tries to take a commanding 27-10 lead into the final 10 minutes. However CBHS were determined and crossed for two tries bringing the score to 27-24. Fortunately for us, we held on and that was the final score. Congratulations team! The team scored 5 tries to Callum Robertson, Zyon Ford, Blake Craddock & Timoci Sauira 2. Fletcher Hewitt-Smart got one conversion.

The team now prepares for the Miles Toyota Championship Final in Nelson this Saturday 20th August against St Bede's College. All the best boys.

Kind Regards

NELSON COLLEGE CLUB REPORT

For the first time in a long while Nelson was sunny and our teams got to play in conditions more suited to running Rugby. We had all our teams from U14 to 1st XV playing in semi finals across the region. The first game of note was the U17 semi final held at Jubilee Park on Friday evening with Nelson College Kahurangi playing Nelson College Oxford. The sunset was spectacular and the game was just as good. Oxford crossed the line twice in the first half and took a 10 nil lead into the half. Kahurangi fought back in the second half and scored a converted try to close the score to 10-7. Both teams battled hard right until the end to get the win, and ultimately Oxford held their line to go to this Saturdays final against Marlborough Boy's College in Blenheim. Marlborough Boys' defeated our U17 Cambridge team on Saturday to make the final. Fridays game was a good game to watch and it was great to see two teams playing really good rugby. Congratulations to Oxford and all the best this Saturday in the U17 Final!

In the U14 grade, Nelson College Argentina played well at Broads to win 22-12 and will host the final Saturday, while Nelson College Kahurangi unfortunately lost to Marlborough Boy's away from home. Marlborough Boys' will travel to Nelson this Saturday to play us at home. All the best Argentina.

In the U15 grade, Nelson College Kahurangi finished top spot in the round robin and will face Marlborough Boys' College Blue in the Final at home this Saturday. All the best to Kahurangi.

Well done to all the other teams on really good seasons and thanks very much to all our coaches and managers for the excellent job you have done. This is greatly appreciated.
