NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

29th August 2022

What a spectacular day it was on Saturday out at Sports Park Motueka for the Miles Toyota Championship Final. After having the final delayed a week due to the flooding in Nelson, it was so nice to be able to get outside and enjoy watching the 1st XV play their final. And what a game! The team really stepped up and delivered a superb display of attacking Rugby and also some brutal defence. To come away with a 45-19 scoreline was impressive against a really good St Bede's team. Well done to the whole team, including the coaching staff of Jono Phillips, Marty O'Cain, Mike Fraser & Grant Billcliff, and the management team of Peter Grigg & William Moloney. A superb outcome and now the team gets to look forward to playing John McGlashan College in the South Island Final this coming Saturday at home. For more reading on the game, go to the NelsonApp or the Nelson Mail. To watch the game, click here.

A big thank you to Kelly Atkin and the Huia RFC for making sure the ground and changing rooms were in such great condition. Our parents and supporters for dressing up the ground and making sure our boys were well supported! Our Old Boys who turned up to support the team. To the Motueka locals who got in behind our team and made Sports Park a home ground away from home for us. Our fantastic sponsors that help make all this happen and to ShutterSport for taking such awesome photos of the game. Thank you all.

1st XV Match Report

The 1st XV had the chance to defend the Miles Toyota title for the first time against St Bede's College 1st XV, along with winning the title for a third time in 4 years, while also defending the Trust Bank Cup. This was certainly a big game and didn't they step up to the task. The team got off to a great start with Nelesoni Malaulau crossing for a try before conceding two tries to St Bede's. However, they moved forward and crossed twice more before the half to go up 19-14 into halftime. They never conceded the lead again, crossing four more times to win 45-19. The team scored 7 tries to Nelesoni Malaulau 3, Callum Robertson, Fletcher Hewitt-Smart, Harrison Inch & Krugar Griffith. Zyon Ford kicked 5 conversions.
