We are thinking of everyone in the North Island who has yet another horrendous weather event has impacted. I don’t think anyone could imagine the devastation that has occurred. Please reach out if there is anything we can do to support you.

This fortnightly newsletter's key focus is updating members on registering existing members for 2023. We apologise for the delay, but it has taken time to link Xero into the programme and allow members to pay by credit card. Please read the details carefully when they come out as there have been a number of changes to the process.

There is the last call for the two new Career Advisor Induction workshops and a call to those interested in trailing the new Tahatū (Careers NZ) website. TEC, alongside the OECD, is calling for examples of “good practice” using digital technology in your career education and guidance—see below for further information.

Kaiārahi CATE NZ

Māori National Executive Representative

As discussed at the national AGM meeting in November, the CATE Executive team is appointing a Māori Executive member. This new member of the executive team will work alongside the national representatives and Kaiārahi to ensure as an organisation we are meeting our commitments to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and ensuring that we are applying a culturally competent lens to the mahi that we do.

Māori members of each CATE region (from our national database) have been sent the profiles of each wahine toa applying for the role and a voting form. Please check your emails including spam and junk mail.

Voting will be open until Tuesday the 28th of February. The successful candidate will be announced shortly after and will attend the first National Executive meeting on March 10, 2023.

Invitation to participate in Tauira Testing

Tahatū is the next generation of the careers.govt.nz website, refreshing its content, tools, and functions. It will help Kiwis of all ages identify their aspirations and make personalised career plans. Tahatū will initially run in parallel with the existing careers.govt.nz website, offering users a careers info hub and a career planning tool. It will eventually replace the careers.govt.nz website.

Tauira Testing is the name that we have given to our demo site. Through Tauira Testing we can show our key audiences how the site will work. Tauira Testing participants get the opportunity to trial the site and to provide feedback so that we can continuously improve it.

TEC would like to invite career practitioners, who are key partners, to take part in Tauira Testing. By participating in Tauira Testing, your expertise will be invaluable in shaping Tahatū and making it a tool that will make your mahi easier to perform and more impactful.

Some things you will be able to trial through Tauira Testing are:

  • Exploring training and qualifications (with the exception of Work Based Training which is in development).
  • Exploring TMoA and NCEA subjects.
  • Exploring 240 out of approx. 840 occupations.
  • Having a look at our first Kaupapa Māori occupation profile.

TEC want to ensure that their priority audiences are represented in this group, so we hope to include schools/practices with large Māori and Pacific populations, Kura Kaupapa Māori and those who provide pathways for disabled students too.

If you are interested in participating, please express your interest by emailing Katia at katia.guiloff@tec.govt.nz

You will receive a follow-up email inviting you to attend one of the next Tauira Testing walk-through and information sessions. These sessions will give you a taste of the demo website and the chance to ask any questions. Alternatively, you can access a video of one of the sessions. You will then receive a link to the demo site to start reviewing and using it in your own time, alongside students/clients, etc. TEC will send a survey to get some feedback on your experience and may invite you to participate in an interview to have a korero about the Tahatū experience*. Representatives from TEC are then looking to arrange a school visit for later in the year to see Tahatū in action.

*We provide a $70 gift voucher to interview participants as a token of appreciation for your time.

TEC Call for Digital Technologies Case Studies

The Tertiary Education Commission, Careers Investment and Insight team are contacts for the OECD Observatory for Digital Technologies in Career Guidance for Youth (ODiCY), developed within the OECD Career Readiness project Career Readiness project - OECD. We have been asked to provide case studies and information of examples of using technology when delivering career guidance to under-18-year-olds.

Please complete the attached form and tell TEC about your initiatives and how you use digital technologies in your practice. This could be resources you developed during COVID for online learning, how you store student information, or how you operate One Note or Google Classrooms with Gateway classes or other career education programmes.
