Tēnā koutou katoa

I am proud to be Acting Principal for the next 10 weeks to enable Alastair to take a much-needed sabbatical.

On Tuesday morning at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club, we celebrated the success of our Year 12 and 13 students who received NCEA Levels 1 and 2 with an Excellence Endorsement. It was a great opportunity to meet with the students and their families to acknowledge their hard work and achievement.

On Wednesday afternoon, we held the annual swimming sports. The day was well organised by Alex Parker and we wish to thank Dallas Couvee for her continual support of this event. Fifty-five of our competitive swimmers competed. A number of records were broken on the day. Congratulations to those swimmers.

The school is currently practicing for the house haka competition, which is being held on Thursday, 23 March. This is a fiercely sought-after trophy.

School Interviews are taking place on Thursday, 23 March and Friday, 24 March - more details for booking appointments are included in this newsletter.

As part of the local Kahui Ako with all our contributing schools - ‘Whangaia ka tupu, ka puawai’ - That which is nurtured will grow and blossom. We will be working together on a Teacher Only Day on Thursday, 6 April, so the school will be closed for instruction on that day. Thank you for your support.

Ngā mihi nui,

Tina Yule
Acting Principal

MOUNT TO ARATAKI

Tauranga City Council are planning for the future of Mount to Arataki, and are asking the community to share what they love about the area, what needs to change, and what matters most to them and their whānau by taking an online survey or attending a community event.

There are questions about making cycling and walking safer, enhancing the natural environment, making it easier to get around, improving parks and public spaces, keeping our community healthy, active and safe, and more.

Share your ideas between March 13 and April 10 at
 www.tauranga.govt.nz/mounttoarataki

Off-field Sports Uniforms

Off-field sports uniforms are available online at https://codesport.co.nz/catalog/MMCSupporters-1106457.htmx or in store at 94 Elizabeth Street. It is important to have all our sports players looking the part and we encourage students to buy a long sleeve or short sleeve tee and / or hoodie if they don’t already have an off-field uniform.

High Achievers
Finnley Oliver has been named in the New Zealand Triathlon team to travel to Spain in June and July to compete against the world’s best.

Poppy Lane has been competing around the country in Mountain Biking, racking up some great results.

Results
Cardrona Downhill - 2nd

What’s been happening

BOPSS 3x3 Basketball Championships
The Bay of Plenty Secondary School 3x3 Basketball Championships  were held at Trustpower Arena last week. Mount Maunganui College sent five teams and had a hugely successful day:

Results
Junior Girls - Gold
Senior Girls - Silver
Junior Boys - Bronze
Senior Boys - Gold

BOPSS Ultimate Championships
Teacher, Anna Walker and ex-student, Nikki Whyte, took a Senior Boys and Senior Girls team to the Bay of Plenty Secondary School Senior Ultimate Championships (Frisbee) on Monday.  Both teams went through the day unbeaten and brought home the trophies.

BOPSS Golf Championships
Ten golfers headed to Lakeview Golf Course in Rotorua to compete in the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Golf Championships. Despite the cold and windy start to the day, the weather cleared and the students had a great day on the course.

Cricket
Girls Cricket have played one Venus Cup game as they start their journey towards Nationals.

They comfortably beat Papamoa College with Jess Benge top scored with 41 not out and debutant Sahara Little got 3 wickets. They now prepare to play a strong Otumoetai team next week.

The Boys 1st XI have been preparing for their Northern Districts Gillette Cup tournament with friendly games against strong opposition.

The boys travelled to Takapuna Grammar and set a first innings score of 150 with Josh Parsons top scoring on 44 but Takapuna proved too strong.

They then beat St John’s Hamilton as they prepare to play Rosmini College in a traditional two day fixture before Gillette Cup in Hamilton.

BOPSS Teams Sailing
After a few years of amalgamation with Katikati College, Mount Maunganui College now has our own team and recently competed in the BOPSS Team Sailing Championships.

The young team did very well finishing … They now prepare for the Central North Island Competition held in Taupo during Summer Tournament Week

NISS Rowing
The North Island Secondary School Rowing Championships were held at Lake Karapiro last weekend.

Our thoughts go out to Reece Steyn who could not compete due to an injury sustained at school athletics. Maya Hambling and McKenzie Steyn represented Mount Maunganui College and despite not getting the results they hoped for, performed admirably. Maya now prepares for Maadi Cup.

BOPSS Futsal Championships
Five teams recently competed at the Bay of Plenty Futsal Championships.

Our Junior Girls, Junior Boys and Senior Girls all brought home silver medals. Senior boys finished third in their pool despite only narrowly losing one game. Senior Reserve girls also didn’t make it out of pool play.

BOPSS Athletics
Bay of Plenty Athletics was held at Tauranga Domain on Wednesday 8 March. The weather gods were good to us and there were some exceptional results.
