Tēnā koutou katoa

As we come to the end of another term at Mount Maunganui College, we reflect on the events that have taken place over the past few months. It has been a disruptive term, with weather events, industrial action, and Teacher Only days all impacting our school community. Despite these challenges, we are proud of our students and staff for persevering and continuing to strive for excellence in their education.

We would like to congratulate Takahe on their outstanding performance in the haka competition. Their dedication and hard work paid off.

Two of our student debate teams participated in the NZ Schools’ Debating Championships for the Bay of Plenty on 26 March. Out of more than 40 teams from across the region, Sarah Adlam (Y12), Luca Ririnui (Y12), and Shiana French (Y13) progressed to the final round before defeating Tauranga Boys’ College to become regional champions. Luca Ririnui was awarded Best Speaker of the Grand Final. Sarah Adlam was commended as a Most Promising Speaker. Luca and Shiana were selected to represent the BOP at National Finals in Wellington at the end of May. Luca, Shiana and Sarah were also selected to participate in The Great Debate charity event, where they will debate alongside politicians and community leaders from around the region at the end of May. Jenna Adlington (Y12) was selected for the BOP Regional Development Squad. All in all, an incredibly successful day for our ākonga.

Congratulations to Mount Maunganui College for winning the 15-minute teacher-directed category in the BOP Shakespeare Festival against six other schools. They put on a great performance of a scene from 'Macbeth', with the involvement of 40 students from the Drama and Te O Haka departments.

It's also wonderful news that Daisy De La Haye won the Most Outstanding Performer award for the Bay of Plenty. Her talents have clearly been recognized, as she has been selected to be part of the New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company, which will be performing at the Globe Theatre in London in June of this year. That is a fantastic opportunity for her, and I'm sure she will make the most of it!

We would also like to extend a well-deserved congratulations to all the sports teams who competed during the summer tournament week. The commitment and sportsmanship displayed by our students were a testament to their hard work and dedication throughout the year.

It sounds like the Commerce Department has been quite active lately! The Level 3 Business classes presenting their business plans to outside judges is a great opportunity for the students to showcase their ideas and receive feedback from professionals in the field. It's always beneficial for students to receive input from those outside of the classroom and to get a sense of what it takes to succeed in the business world.

As for the Level 1 Business classes' successful Market Day, that's great news! Market Day is a fantastic way for students to learn about entrepreneurship and the basics of running a business. It's also a chance for them to put their skills and creativity to the test and see if they can turn a profit.

Kudos to the Community Council for organizing the event and supporting a good cause through the Bake Sale. It's always heartwarming to see communities come together to help those in need. Over $1,000 was raised to support the disaster fund.

We would also like to remind you that James Walker and Keilani Horne will be speaking at the Anzac Civic Service at the Mount Cenotaph on April 25 at 9am. We encourage all of our students and their families to attend this important event and pay tribute to those who have served our country.

As we approach the Easter break, we would like to wish all of our students and their families a happy and safe holiday. We hope that this time will be a chance to rest, recharge and spend time with loved ones.

Thank you to our staff, students, and families for your continued support and commitment. We look forward to seeing you back on Monday 24 April for the start of Term 2.

Ngā mihi nui,

Tina Yule
Acting Principal

SCHOOL WEBSITE

MCC Website goes multilingual!!!

When you visit the Mount Maunganui College website now you will notice an option to select your language. This change was prompted by the 9YgK Social Studies class.

In exploring the concepts of diversity, inclusiveness and accessibility within our Tūrangawaewae unit, the Social Studies class identified that our college website was not accessible to speakers of Māori (one of our national languages). The class researched possible solutions, invited Mr Sinton to the class to discuss the problem and logistics including budgets and ultimately identified and were able to influence the result.

Ka rawe 9YgK Social Scientists - a fantastic contribution to our College.

MOUNT TO ARATAKI

Tauranga City Council are planning for the future of Mount to Arataki, and are asking the community to share what they love about the area, what needs to change, and what matters most to them and their whānau by taking an online survey or attending a community event.

There are questions about making cycling and walking safer, enhancing the natural environment, making it easier to get around, improving parks and public spaces, keeping our community healthy, active and safe, and more.

Share your ideas between March 13 and April 10 by clicking below:
