NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

9th May 2023

What a wet period we are experiencing! It is a shame all games in Tasman were cancelled over the weekend, but the silver lining is our fields will be in better shape for Club Day this Saturday. And we have lot's of games for everyone to enjoy.

At Broads we have three games being played, with the U15 teams having to get up early for their match in order to get our games played in time for everyone to get to the front field. Here are the match times:

9:00am U15 White vs. U15 Kahurangi on Broads #1

10:00am U17 Oxford vs. U17 Kahurangi on Broads #2

10:30am U17 Cambridge vs. Stoke on Broads #1

If you can, please get down to Broads to support these teams. Chris Harvey, a very helpful Old Boy of the school is going to be Match Managing the games so please say hello to him. He does a great job for our club. Thank you Chris.

The Front Field will see our first game played on it since being refurbished. This will be a big occasion and hopefully after all this rain, a chance to see both teams come off the field relatively clean and having played a fast and exciting game of Rugby!

If you can make it, the cutting of the ribbon to open this field is going to be at the top of the stairs at 11:30am. We also have our Band playing music prior to the game so this should be a welcome change to our match build up. We will also have a coffee cart onsite for those needing a drink.

It is also Boarding Open Day on Saturday so there will be lots of people around. Parking will be at a premium as we are closing the front of the school so no cars are on the grounds. Please be prepared to park in the neighboring roads and walk to the game. This will ensure you get there on time and people are safe to enjoy the game on school grounds. Thank you.

The Nelson College Old Boys are also putting of a BBQ & refreshments after the game for the contractors who put their time and expertise into developing the front field. Thank you. And for Old Boys of the school. This will be held at the courtyard behind the Script.

It is going to be an enjoyable day and we hope to see you there.

Ngā pou | Our Values

Nelson College have introduced new values that align with our current environment and the diversity that makes us Nelson College. The values of Nelson College Rugby align really well with the new Pou and going forward will be the backbone of how we deliver Rugby at the school. Here is an explanation of ngā pou:

Pou are commonly thought of as pillars, upright support poles, or posts. In traditional Māori narratives of the origin of the universe, pou were pillars of light, used to keep sky and earth separated. This allowed the natural world to flourish and, in turn, people to prosper.

Our pou relate to all who attend and work at our kura. Everyone standing strong, striving to be successful and living our pou (values).

This is why Nelson College has chosen three we believe encompass what we want to achieve which are appropriate for all akonga attending our kura.

The selection of the pou has been based on feedback from homerooms, our staff and the community, to ensure that they were something that we are all going to take on and live.

Our three pou chosen are:

  • Manaaki meaning Care
    • This means to look after others & the environment. We aim to raise the mana of others
  • Pono meaning Integrity
    • This means acting with honesty & doing what's right in everything we do. We aim to be the best version of ourselves
  • Kairangi meaning Success
    • The means having goals & doing our best to achieve them. We aim to ‘polish the greenstone’

Aligning these to Ā Mātou Kawa | Our Expectations for Sport, here are our expectations for all players, coaches, managers and parents within Nelson College Sport & our Rugby when representing our kura.

 Manaaki | Care

  • Treat everyone with respect
  • Win with humility
  • Always put our team ahead of ourselves
  • Be inclusive of others

Pono | Integrity

  • Always do the right thing
  • Own our actions
  • Respect official's decisions
  • Represent with pride

Kairangi | Success

  • Be committed to your team
  • Be prepared to perform
  • Be better today than yesterday
  • Plan to succeed

As a kura and a club, we would love for everyone to embrace and embody these values, and support our boys to become better people. This will make our place a better place and those who come through here, better people. Thank you.

1st XV News

The 1st XV travelled to Christchurch to play St Andrew's College at St Andrew's over the weekend. The weather was perfect for their first Miles Toyota Premiership game of the season and the team didn't dissapoint.

They came up against a committed STAC team and had to battle right to the end for a 34-22 win. In doing so, they had to deal with two players being yellow carded and one receiving a red card (this has been subsequently overturned by the judiciary). But our boys didn't lie down, they stuck to their plan and scored some great tries, two in the last 5 minutes!

Tries went to Mikey Morrison (2), Saumaki Saumaki, Jamie Hampson & Finn Kilworth. Zyon Ford added 2 conversions and a penalty, and Harrison Inch 1 conversion.

Congratulations to the team, coaches and management for a good win and great start to the season.

Next Game: 12:00pm vs. St Bede's College on the front field this Saturday. Please get along if you can to support them!

Kind Regards

AGE GRADE RUGBY DRAW

NELSON COLLEGE CLUB REPORT

All Age Grade Rugby over the weekend was postponed to July 1st due to the weather. Here's hoping the rain dissipates and we get some sunshine to dry the fields later this week!

Our 2nd XV played the St Thomas of Canterbury College 2nd XV at Broads last Wednesday. St Thomas have been included in the new Miles Toyota Championship competition, the same competition that Waimea Combined Schools will be in. They were keen to come and play us to get a tough preseason game but also get used to travelling as a team and form their team bonds. It turned out to be a great game with both teams putting in some tough defense and exciting attacking plays. St Thomas came away with a tight 21-17 win. Congratulations to them and we look forward to the next time we meet! Well done to our 2nd XV who are developing well and really forming as a team. Their next game will be on June 1st against Marlborough Boys' College in our annual school exchange. This will be followed with Timaru Boy's High School coming up to play us on June 7th on the front field.

To view the St Thomas game, watch here

All our teams are at home for Club Day this Saturday, so please come down to Broads and support our lads.
