Kia ora everyone,

I hope you had a fantastic weekend wherever you were. It was amazing to finally have picture perfect days.

In this newsletter we are encouraging everyone to complete the TEC survey and put your ideas forward for the design of self awareness tool/s on the new platform Tahatū.

Registrations for the CATE conference in Whangārei are rolling in—nearly 200 to date. Over the next few months we will be introducing the keynote speakers. In the last newsletter we profiled Dr Candy Ho, see who's up next below.

Lunchtime Bytes continue to be popular, it was fantastic to meet Mel, our Māori CATE Executive representative. On the 26th May we have Dr Lynette Reid “A conversation about conversations”, continue reading for more information and registration details.

Later in the month we are holding an evening seminar with Learning Network who will look at how to support career educators communicate the importance of work readiness and assist to prepare students with 21st century skills and global competencies for purpose-driven career choices in a rapidly changing world.

Ngā mihi,
Leigh Gray

Tahatū is the new careers website replacing Careers NZ In 2024. TEC are currently in the design phase for the “self awareness” tool. We are encouraging all CATE members to complete the following survey so the tool meets the needs of our students. Think about what your ultimate must haves are—should it just be one tool, or a combination of tools that build on attributes, strengths, values each year. What have you seen that works well?

Opportunity to feedback is open now and closes this Friday 19th May, 5 pm.

Introducing our next keynote speaker—Mark Ingles.

Mark has presented to over 200,000 people across the world, inspiring them to embrace challenge, to develop the attitude to excel. It is this combination of achievement in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds and his ability to interpret this to a wide range of people that resulted in the honour of being both a delegate and panellist at the UN partnered 2009 Global Creative Leadership Summit in New York, presenter at TEDx Chicago 2011 and guest lecturer for the Oxygen series in the UK, November 2011.

Much of Mark's time is spent in India, consulting to the countries top executives, focusing on change, challenge and the role of attitude in business. Mark leads one to three treks to Nepal each year to raise funds and awareness for Limbs4All projects in Nepal and Cambodia.

Challenge and attitude is at the core of all growth, in our families, communities and businesses. Mark is the epitome of Challenge and Attitude. As the only double amputee who has stood on the summit of Mt Everest, Mark truly defines the phrase 'Attitude determines your Altitude'.

A conversation about conversations! Dr Lynette Reid—Friday 26th May 1.30pm

The value of conversation has not escaped any of us. Career conversations are identified as a key strategy and process in career education and guidance. In this session, I would like to focus on the following, with an Ao Māori lens:

  • What does the experience of a career conversation look like
    and feel like?
  • What do you hope results from career conversations?
  • What influences are present?

In line with our topic, I hope we can engage in conversation around each and draw on our personal and professional experiences to further understand the meaning of career conversations in our contexts.

Dr. Lynette Reid is Ngāti Porou and has been in the field of career development for over 20 years. She has recently completed research on successful career transitions from the perspective of careers staff in schools. Lynette has also left a long-time role as an academic and continues to contribute to the field of career development.
