Kia everyone,

We have an amazing opportunity on the global stage to voice what is happening in NZ schools in relation to career education and guidance. Apologies for yet another survey but this is a forum to state what is working well and talk about the issues we face such as time and space in the curriculum. I encourage all Career Leads/Advisors to complete this as the results of this survey will be valuable as we continue to advocate for more funding and time allowance.

Just a reminder below about the upcoming Lunchtime Byte this week with Dr Lynette Reid “A conversation about conversations” and the webinar next Tuesday from Learning Network on developing work ready global citizens. This webinar is open to senior leaders and heads of departments also.

OECD—An opportunity for you to tell your story
The OECD, is doing a study in several countries, including Aotearoa New Zealand, to better understand what’s happening in “career pathways”. Helping young people transition into adulthood is a global challenge, and the OECD wants to learn how we’re approaching it.

A more detailed description of the project can be found here.

We have been given the opportunity to tell our story. Please be candid about what’s working well, issues we face, and ideas moving forward.

Apologies for yet another survey but we have the opportunity to be part of a global discussion about the importance of career education and guidance in schools. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Click here to complete the survey.
Please complete before the end of day June 2.

Paul Herdman, a leader from the US working for the OECD, recently visited NZ on May 2-5 to learn from our students, educators, administrators, and employers. The OECD will be using a version of the same survey in Australia, Scotland, Canada, and the US, so we’ll be able to get a fuller picture of the findings later in the year which will support advocacy for more time and space for career education and guidance in our schools.

Don’t miss this week’s Lunchtime Bytes!

A conversation about conversations! Dr Lynette Reid
THIS Friday 26th May at 1.30 pm

The value of conversation has not escaped any of us. Career conversations are identified as a key strategy and process in career education and guidance. In this session, I would like to focus on the following, with an Ao Māori lens:

  • What does the experience of a career conversation look like and feel like?
  • What do you hope results from career conversations?
  • What influences are present?

In line with our topic, I hope we can engage in conversation around each and draw on our personal and professional experiences to further understand the meaning of career conversations in our contexts.

Dr. Lynette Reid is Ngāti Porou and has been in the field of career development for over 20 years. She has recently completed research on successful career transitions from the perspective of careers staff in schools. Lynette has also left a long-time role as an academic and continues to contribute to the field of career development.
