In this presentation, Anthony will share insights from a large international research project which reviewed longitudinal datasets from 10 countries to investigate the relationships between teenage career development and better employment outcomes ten years later.  Identifying a many predictors of better outcomes linked to how students explore, experience and think about potential futures in employment, the presentation will summarise the findings and discuss how they can be drawn upon in design of effective and equitable career guidance systems.  The presentation provides important background to the keynote presentation of Tricia Berry at the CATE conference on Thursday 23rd of November.

The Ministry of Education wants all school children to have access to the internet at home, and so they (Manaiakalani Education Trust) are working with the Ministry to arrange free home internet for any household with a school-age child and no current home internet connection.  The Ministry will pay for installation and monthly costs through to 30 June 2024, and we’re working on the solution for beyond (with no obligation on families).

This is a really significant opportunity to help all our learners have access to the internet from home, to continue their learning when they’re not at school, and to ensure their whānau is connected to digital life.

Information has been sent out to schools, educators, housing providers and social agencies to ensure that any household who is eligible can benefit from this.  However, the message sometimes gets lost or not picked up by the right person, so they’re letting others within school communities know too, and this may be something that you can also share with the students they work with.

Whānau of school children have the option to contact the MOE directly to get connected (as well as being referred in by schools) as we want to make sure that any household who needs it can take up this opportunity.  The MOE have made it straightforward for whānau to get connected by setting up a team called EDOS that talks to them, arranges installation by the internet service provider and arranges for the Ministry to pay the provider directly.  EDOS also runs a support helpdesk for any questions that the whānau may have.

More information for households is in the brochure (MoE Free Internet Programme 2023) and here: EDOS - Home
