Kia ora Koutou and Welcome to Netball Mainland’s July Newsletter, written by Kiana Gallon What a jam-packed month we have across the Zone as our Centre's continue to prepare for the biggest event in the representative campaign: Netball NZ U18 National Championships, held in Dunedin. Followed by Year 7 and 8 Player Development Programmes to fill the school holidays, and the South Island Secondary School Junior Netball Tournament to keep everyone busy. We wish all of our participating Centre's good luck at the U18 Nationals. Mainlands Coach and Umpire Lead, Kelly Bodger, and NetballSmart's Kiana Gallon are looking forward to providing support on the ground at the tournament. Our team has had the privilege of actively traveling and visiting Centre's to engage wherever possible, hoping to catch some great netball and development opportunities. Please don't hesitate to come and say hello when you see our team at your Centre. In this edition of the newsletter, we're excited to bring you more Centre news from across Mainland, along with insights on Netball NZ U18 Nationals, and the Trident Homes Tactix. Be sure not to miss out on what lies ahead and join us in celebrating our netball community throughout the 2024 season. Kia pai tō rā |

Holistic Development through restructuring the Year 7 and 8 Netball Model (Player Development Programme). For those players in Year 7 and 8, the Woolworths futureFERNS programme focused on ensuring they had the best possible opportunity to reach their potential physically, psychologically and socially. For this to occur, players needed enjoyable, quality experiences that help build their self-belief and ignite their passion for sport. In 2018, the organisation released its Player Development Programme (PDP), with the radical step of halting the de-selection of players at Year 7 and 8 levels (removing the previous representative structure). Instead, the PDP would provide quality extension opportunities that met the physical, social and emotional needs of this age-group. It was also designed to help bridge the gap between the junior and youth programmes, and slow the decline in player numbers at secondary school level. The focus of the Player Development Programme is to: - Provide development opportunities for all Year 7 and 8 players (players are not selected)
- Continue to focus and build on fundamental movement skills as athletes move through puberty
- Include technical and tactical development for all netball positions
- Develop a wider talent base so players can specialise when it really counts
- Implement a national philosophy for the development of Year 7 and 8 players
- Embed the Physical Literacy Approach across all aspects of the programme.
