Kia ora koutou katoa,

Last week I attended the Network of Expertise Summit in Wellington, where I had the pleasure of meeting various people from different subject associations within the education sector. It heartened me to know that there are a lot of very passionate people who are pushing hard to represent those in school so that they have their voices heard in government and ministries, as well as doing great work to support their members. I also had the opportunity to hear Brendan Spillaine, an acclaimed Australian educator, speaker and coach, talking about leadership. One of his key messages was that we show up as people first in all that we do and again reminded us that we need to look after ourselves first. This is a timely reminder, and I have linked a great article here on burnout in the helping professions so that you are able to check in and make sure you are looking after yourself.

As scholarship season is starting, I have also linked some resources to help direct your students.

Finally, don't forget, if you are a new Careers Advisor in a school, I am running induction workshops in Auckland (6th & 7th June), Christchurch (25th & 26th June) and Wellington (2nd & 3rd July). These are free to attend if you are a CATE member. Please make sure to register on the forms below.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Ngā mihi,
Tara Heta

Building on Pacific qualifications
With the ‘Building Pasifika’ campaign, BCITO is calling for more Pasifika learners to start their apprenticeships, where they’ll be supported every step of the way.

Despite reasonably high numbers of Pasifika tradies working in the construction industry, many don’t have qualifications. As a result, Pasifika people are underrepresented in leadership roles and less likely to own their own businesses.

Recognising the importance of more diverse leadership to a thriving construction sector and looking to help more Pasifika tradies go further in their careers, BCITO’s ‘Building Pasifika’ campaign is designed to support Pasifika learners to gain a formal qualification. You can find out more here

Message from TEC on the Tahatū roadshow
Thank you for your support of the recent Tahatū roadshow.

Career advisers and practitioners are an important audience for us, and we appreciate the opportunity to show you Tahatū and to hear your thoughts. We were delighted with both the number of CATE members who attended the sessions and the quality and enthusiasm of their feedback. We received more than 600 pieces of feedback from the 18 sessions we held around the country.

While we can’t address every suggestion or idea, we’ve looked at and prioritised each piece of feedback into themes. Some things have landed very high up our ‘to-do’ list, some are on our backlog, and other issues or suggestions are being monitored as we pilot Tahatū in secondary schools.

It was interesting to note that in some cases consistent themes emerged in the feedback from around the country. We’ve collated these into a set of FAQs, which are attached.

Our secondary schools pilot is currently underway in 11 schools. We will roll out the pilot to more schools throughout 2024. We’re excited to see how career advisers use Tahatū in a real-life environment with their students.

Thank you again for your support.
