Kia ora koutou katoa,

I hope you have had a good couple of weeks and things are going well.

Last week I ran my first new Careers Advisor Induction workshop in Auckland. It was lovely to meet 30 people who are starting their journey in this world and it took me back to my own experience of attending a workshop, run by CATE and Careers NZ in 2016. I still remember feeling like I had no idea of what I was doing and being overwhelmed by all of the information I had to learn. The great thing is that as a community, I have always felt that we are very supportive of each other and there is a great network out there willing to share and help. Working in Careers can sometimes be lonely in schools, so please reach out to other members and get involved in your regional CATE group so that we can work together to support the important mahi that you do.

What is a meaningful encounter with the World of Work?
It is now widely accepted that meaningful encounters with the world of work are vitally important for all young people.
But what is meant by a ”meaningful encounter”?

This article has been written in response to teachers wanting more information about what constitutes such encounters and how they can go about getting the best outcomes for young people.

A new interactive careers roadmap has been launched by Civil Contractors New Zealand to showcase the different opportunities in the civil construction industry and inspire school leavers and other career seekers to explore them.

The digital CCNZ Careers Roadmap allows people to discover more than 50 different civil construction careers and understand what each involves, the skills or certifications they might need in work in the role, and future career opportunities the role can lead to.

Links to training providers are embedded in the roadmap to make it easy for career seekers to take the first step into the civil construction industry, along with inspiring worker videos and articles to help bring different roles to life.

Rebecca Fox, Workforce Development Manager at CCNZ encourages everyone to have a go with this map and use it as the basis for any career conversation to see what people are interested in.  Many of the roles on the map are ones that exist across other sectors, some of course are sector specific.  For all students that are kinaesthetic, or really not sure what they want to do this is a great tool.

Rebecca can be contacted at rebecca@civilcontractors.co.nz or  027 211 6317

Prime Ministers Vocational Excellence Award (PMVEA) Update

The following email was sent from Rob Mill—General Manager
TP-Te Poutāhū (Curriculum Centre), National Office Mātauranga House
education.govt.nz

I am writing to share an important update about the Prime Minister’s Vocational Excellence Award (PMVEA).

As you may be aware, the Government has required all public service departments, including the Ministry of Education, to meet its savings targets and align spending with its priorities. After careful consideration, we regret to inform you that the PMVEA will be discontinued effective this year, and the funding re-allocated to support the Government's education targets.

The Award’s primary goal is to help raise the profile of vocational education in secondary schools, and this has largely been achieved. The PMVEA website will consequently be decommissioned on 7 June 2024. We recognise the significance of the PMVEA for your students and school community, and would like to encourage you to continue to celebrate students who excel in vocational education. There is information on alternative ways of celebrating vocational excellence on our website.

Thank you for supporting all our learners to achieve their full potential.

The Government has announced that Fees Free for the first year of study or training will finish at the end of 2024. A final-year Fees Free scheme will replace it, starting from January 2025 with the following parameters:

  • Learners entering their final year of study or training from 1 January 2025 and who have not received first-year Fees Free may be eligible for the new final-year Fees Free scheme.
  • Eligibility will include provider- and work-based study or training at Levels 3 and above on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework.
  • Repayment will be made after the learner completes their qualification, with refunds starting from 2026.

We are working through transition arrangements for first-year Fees Free learners as well as detailed policy design and implementation for the final-year Fees Free scheme. Once decisions are made, we will update this information here
