Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter. As we head towards Week 7 of Term 3, we hope this newsletter finds you well and energised as we continue to support your students in navigating their career pathways.

In this issue, you will find a link to the questions and answers gathered from the recent Gateway Conference. There is also information about the upcoming VET reforms and how you can find out about the proposed changes, and submit any feedback you have.

Additionally, we’re excited to highlight our upcoming Lunchtime Byte session, where we will explore the new Careerwise “Connections” feature. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn how to use this tool, which connects to the NELPS by helping schools better connect with their communities and organisations nationwide.

As we move through this busy term, which can sometimes be overwhelming, it is vital to recognise the important work you do, ensuring that every student feels empowered to pursue their passions and make informed decisions about their futures. Thank you for your dedication and hard work in guiding our young people on their career journeys.

Happy reading!

Lunchtime Byte Webinar
CareerWise platform—overview and new features. Wednesday 4th Sept @ 12pm

Join us for a discovery session on CareerWise! We'll start with a quick overview for schools new to our platform and discuss our new 'Connections' feature, which is gradually rolling out. We're conducting case studies with a few schools and have collaborated closely with Leigh Grey and the Ministry of Education on this feature.

'Connections' addresses the National Education Learning Priorities by helping schools better connect with their communities and organisations nationwide. It includes a built-in reporting tool to track your school's progress in achieving the NELPs. While it's designed for whole-school use, we understand it may need to start being utilised by the careers team first.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about how CareerWise can benefit your school! Q&A welcome at the end

Wednesday 4th September at 12pm. Please register here

Message from Leigh Gray and Dr Lynette Reid
Kia ora everyone,

I’m supporting Dr. Lynette Reid with important research into Career Education and Guidance Plans in schools. We need your help to understand how widely these plans are implemented and how effectively they are used.

How you can contribute:

  1. If your school has a Career Education and Guidance Plan: We’d love to hear about how you use and communicate it. Your detailed responses will provide insight into its effectiveness and impact.
  2. If your school does not have a plan, please take a moment to answer the first survey question. This helps us understand the broader context and prevalence of such plans.

Click here to complete the survey.

Your participation is crucial for us to build a comprehensive understanding. Thank you for your time and support!

 Ngā mihi,

2024 Vocational education and training reforms.
You are invited to join an online meeting for Careers & Gateway—to hear about the consultation on the vocational education and training (VET) redesign.

The Government recently announced the consultation on the VET redesign.
TEC are hosting a meeting for careers and gateway to outline the proposed changes and ensure that you have the information you need to make a submission on this important consultation, should you wish to.

Online Meeting:
04 September 3.30–4.30pm
Join the meeting now

You can find other meeting times on the TEC site

CATE President, Craig Dyason and I attended a meeting on these reforms and felt there was very little information to be able to make a full submission on behalf of CATE at this stage.

Individual schools can comment on the importance of a strong VET system that not only supports the post-secondary training and employment sectors but also within the school space for programmes such as Gateway (which we recognise as having its own review), trades academies and STAR offerings. Such programmes require the partnerships between ITO’s, the workforce and schools to remain strong.

We have found when working with government agencies that examples of best practice and real-world applications of policy are more effective in highlighting the importance of a sector rather than a generic statement.

While CATE will submit this broader policy based support for a strong system, this will only be effective if members also place submissions of their own practice to support this.

We urge you to write your own submissions, using your individual programmes of learning to reinforce these messages.

To provide feedback, stakeholders can go to the MOE Site and submit it in three ways.

Download and email—Download and fill out the submission template, and email it to VocationalEducation.Reforms@education.govt.nz

Online submission—Fill out a submission form and submit it online.

Email—Email their feedback directly to: VocationalEducation.Reforms@education.govt.nz
Submissions close 12th September 2024.
