Shirley Boys' Exchange

What an exchange! This one will be remembered for a long time to come with sun, rain, freezing cold wind and snow all putting the boys to the test. The U14A Rugby team played in freezing conditions kicking off at 10.30am. They played really well in their first game as a team, scoring the first try under the post to Brecon Jelfs-Berry. Gavin Holder converted it to lead 7-0. Shirley Boys struck back with an unconverted try before Seth Munro scored our second try. We went into the break with a 12-5. Turning into the wind, Shirley used the wind well scoring 3 tries to come back and lead 20-12. Our boys held onto the ball in the last few minutes and were rewarded with Seth Munro crashing over for his second try. Final score 20-17 to Shirley. Well done to the team in their first game together. See the photo just below of the U14s warming up with the ominous snow filled clouds in the background!

The 1st XV kicked off at midday in slightly better, but still freezing conditions and soon found themselves down 0-9 with Shirley converting 3 penalties. Jacob Neha-Manihera managed to cross the line for a try just before halftime to close the gap. The second half was all Nelson, with Jacob scoring 2 more tries along with Hunter Leppien & Netani Baleisomosomo getting one each. Reegan Lawton converted to make the final score 29-9 to Nelson. Another good win for the team who now head to Christ College to the 96th Quadrangular Tournament.

2nd XV vs. Kahurangi

The 2nd XV are played the Kahurangi Colts team at Riwaka RFC for the third time. Kahurangi started well but couldn't convert their early chances. The 2nd XV defended well and when an opportunity came, they made it count. In the end they beat Kahurangi 55-5 and took out the 3 game series 3-0. Well done to the team and their coaches Terry Beggs and Grant Billcliff.

Kind Regards

Well done to our teams on Saturday. Some great results with 4 teams winning their semi-finals and competing in the final this coming weekend. It was a fantastic advertisement for Rugby on Saturday with 5 semi finals being played at the one venue. The sun was shining and the fields were excellent at Tahunanui. A huge thank you to Marist RFC & Tracy Marfell for accommodating us! The level of support on the sidelines was great also and really made for a nice day of Rugby. RUGBY ACADEMY

The Rugby Academy classes have been running well despite the poor weather of late. The Senior boys have recently completed a course on officiating Rugby and have refereed at two Tasman Rugby Union tournaments so far. The most recent was held at Tahunanui and gave our boys the change to referee both Girls Tackle Rugby and competitive Rippa Rugby at the Port Nelson Rippa Festival. The boys did a great job and refereed to a high standard.

Recently, they have started a course on how to coach. This involves learning how to plan a coaching session and how to deliver it. They got their chance to practice on the new Nelson College Turf recently with their peers as their players. They had a lot of fun and learnt plenty. Starting Term 3, they will coach students from the Preparatory School, Hampden Street School and Nelson Intermediate School for 6 weeks leading up to local tackle tournaments.
