NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

9th August 2021

We are nearing the end of the 2021 season and our teams are doing great! This Saturday we have the 1st XV playing at Nelson College in the Miles Toyota Championship Semi Final against Timaru Boy's High School. The team finished second on the table following their 62-0 win over Roncalli Aoraki Combined on Saturday. This game kicks off at 11.00am and will be a cracking game. For those supporters, Old Boys' and Sponsors who come to watch, please come to the staffroom after the game for a function. We would love to see you there!

We also have the U17 Kahurangi & U14 teams playing against Marlborough Boys' College for 1st & 2nd in their respective TRU Cup competitions. Well done to both of these teams for making the final.

Saturday will be the end of the club season and for many of our players and we want to thank you all for the time, effort and commitment all players have put in to make the 2021 season a really successful one. It has been a pleasure getting to know all the boys and we are in good stead for the future with the quality of boys we have coming through the club and school. Thank you to our dedicated coaches and managers also who have done a great job in guiding our players and supporting their development as both Rugby players and people. Thank you.

Games vs. St Thomas of Canterbury College - Wednesday 4th August

What a great day in Culverden last Wednesday. Our U15A & 2nd XV teams both played St Thomas of Canterbury College in really well contested matches. The 2nd XV scored 5 tries to take a 31-12 win, but the drama came in the U15A game with Nelson College being down by around 20 points with 15 miuntes to play, then scoring 4 tries to level the scores at 48 all. Zyon Ford stepped up to take the conversion from 5 meters in from the touch line, striking the ball well and sending it sailing over the posts for a 50-48 win!! What a finish! The 2nd XV duly joined the U15 team in celebrating the come from behind win by mobbing Zyon, which you can see in the photo below.

A huge thank you to the Hurunui RFC for hosting us and putting on a nice post match meal. And thank you to the North Canterbury Referees for coming to officiate. Much appreciated.

Games vs. St Bedes College - Wednesday 11th August

On Wednesday, the Nelson College U14A & 3rd XV teams are travelling to Culverden to play St Bedes College. The U14A team will play St Bedes U15B team and the 3rd XV are playing the St Bedes 3rd XV. Both games kick off at 1.00pm. The weather forecast is looking sunny and a cool 8 degrees, and fingers crossed there will be not snow on the pitch!!

2nd XV vs. TBHS 2nd XV - Friday 13th August

On Friday, we have the Timaru Boys' High School 2nd XV coming to play our 2nd XV at Jubilee Park, Richmond. Timaru have recently won their competition so this should be a tough game. The game kicks off under lights at 7.00pm with the Waimea Old Boys' Clubrooms open for any families and supporters to grab a refreshment. Please come along and watch the 2nd XV in their 7th and final game of the season.

Thank You Krugar!

I want to thank someone who has been a superstar for Nelson College Rugby this season, Krugar Griffith. Krugar is a year 12 student who took on the job of setting up the fields for home games and has done a brilliant job for the club. He has been out in all sorts of weather and never complained. Thank you Krugar. Please make sure if you see him setting up the fields in the coming weeks, that you thank him for his commitment to the club and school.

RUGBY ACADEMY

DRUG FREE SPORT NZ WORKSHOP & COACHING COURSE

The Senior Rugby Academy boys along with some Junior Rugby players attended a Drug Free Sport NZ Workshop on Thursday at school. This workshop is all about educating sportspeople on the importance of looking after their bodies and what they put in them. One key website the boys learnt about was https://www.globaldro.com/Home where you can input your medications or supplements and check the prohibited status of specific medications based on the current World Anit-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. This is a great resource. To learn more check out the new https://drugfreesport.org.nz/ website.

The Senior Rugby Academy boys are in the process of completing a coaching course at the moment and had the chance on Monday to do some practical coaching. The Preparatory School Rugby team is being coached by Paddy Beggs, James Fleet, Jed Powell & Lucas Walker. The boys are will also take this team to their Intermediate Rugby Tournament on August 20th at Greenmeadows. Hampden Street School also brought up year 5 & 6 students who are preparing for the Nelson Richmond Tackle 7's on Tuesday 10th August. The boys did a great job delivering their sessions to the students and it was great to see them interacting with the kids. They will continue to coach over the next 3 Mondays and hopefully learn about their coaching style and continue coaching into the future.
