NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

16th May 2022

For many boys, playing Rugby for their schools 1st XV is the highlight of their Rugby playing career and certainly a great achievement. What is great to see from a schools point of view is these boys going on to achieve in Rugby post their high school career. It is great to see three of our boys from the last two years doing this. Congratulations to Wil Thornalley, Daniel Dixon and Nic Sauira on being selected and playing for the Crusader U20 team in the weekend in a win over the Hurricanes U20. All the best in your future development.

Marlborough Boys' College Exchange

This exchange is being held in Blenheim this year on Thursday 2nd June. We have three Rugby teams playing in this - 1st XV, 2nd XV & U15A.

NELSON COLLEGE CLUB REPORT

It was another good weekend of Rugby with our teams playing across a number of different venues. At home our U14 Kahurangi team had a convincing win over Quinns. U17 Oxford and Cambridge played a really good game on Friday afternoon with Oxford taking the win 45-26 and on Saturday U17 Kahurangi had a solid win over Waimea College on the front field.

Travelling away, U14 Argentina managed to overcome Waimea Old Boys at Jubilee Park 36-22 while both of our U15 teams travelled to Blenheim to play Marlborough Boys' College teams. The White team lost 17-19 in a great game at Renwick Domain while the Kahurangi team held on for a 29-28 win at Marlborough Boys' Field 1.

The competitions are looking really close this year and are certainly making for exciting matches which is great.

During the Week

On Tuesday we were fortunate to have Dan Perrin (Mako Coach) come in and work with our U14 forwards & coaches on their scrummaging technique. This was well received and the boys were appreciative of Dan's time and knowledge.

We also had DrugFree Sport NZ come into our Senior and Junior Rugby Academy classes. This session was based around sportspeople taking responsibility for what they put into their bodies and making good choices if they want to be clean athletes. This is a valuable session for boys, particularly as they start to push for higher honours and also start using supplements to help with their training.

In the sports office, we has some new shelves for storing Rugby gear built and installed by some of our keen Rugby boys in the trade building class. Below we have Ryan Rockell and Ethan Haycock-Grant after completing the installation. Thank you for the great job boys!

NEW Experimental Domestic Safety Law Variations (EDSLV's)

This season there are some new EDSLV’s that apply to teenage and junior rugby. Here is a link so you can see what applies to teenage (Under 14-17).
