INTRODUCTION TO ROWING

When you first start rowing there's lots of equipment and words used that are very unfamiliar. So we've set out here Rowing 101 guidelines. Girls don't worry if it seems a lot - in no time it will be a second language.

Parents the most important thing is to look for the Marsden light blue oars - that means you're at least watching the right boat in the distance!!

BOAT CLASSIFICATIONS

The best website to follow regattas is RowIt. You can find a wealth of information about the regatta, the race schedule, the results, the rowers etc.

The boat race classifications on rowit are usually in a set sequence, the gender (boys, girls, mens, womens) the age (Under 15,16,17 and 18) and/or expertise of the rowers (e.g. Novice), the number of rowers’ seats, whether they are rowing or sculling (x) and if they have a coxswain (+) or not.

The boats in common usage have 1, 2, 4, or 8 seats. For example:

Girls U18 2- = under 18 girls coxless pair

Girls U18 2x = under 18 girls double scull

Girls U17 4+ = under 17 girls coxed four (rowing)

Girls U16 4x+ = under 16 girls coxed quad (sculling)

Girls U15 8+ = under 15 girls eight (rowing)

Girls U18 G8 = under 18 girls eight. (8's always have coxes so the + is often omitted).

Girls U158x+ =under 15 girls coxed eight (sculling)
