SOUTHERN UNITED GIRLS ACADEMY

WHAT IS THE SOUTHERN UNITED GIRLS ACADEMY?

The Southern United Girls Academy is for girls aged 12-17 in Southern Football Region. Girls who are looking for a football challenge throughout the year and are looking to learn and grow holistically as a footballer. The Southern United Academy has two squads; U15 and U18.

SUW U18 Development Team

This team is aimed at players U18. Players in this team will train twice a week starting in August leading up to the National Youth Development League. At the end of the development team's campaign those involved in the Women's wider squad will be invited to continue to train with the senior team. Players not involved in the womens squad will have the opportunity to train with the academy once the development squads' campaign has finished.

The National Youth Development League mirrors the National Women's League and is seen as the pinnacle competition for this age group. Players chosen to represent Southern united in this league will play against the best players in the U18 age bracket from the different federations. Players will also gain experience travelling as a team and being a part of a high-performance enviroment. We believe this will provide a great foundation for those players who aspire to play in the national Women's league. Players selected for this squad will get to train at the same time and location as the senior squad which allows for a visible pathway for future endeavours.

U15 Southern United Academy

The Southern United Academy is the Talent Development Program (TDP) for girls in the Southern Football Region. The Southern United Academy Program is a platform to give our best players the tools to develop and progress through to the National Youth League, Women’s National League, and beyond.

This year's program will again involve a 'Battle of the South' competition in which regional teams will compete in Dunedin with a cost equalisation model (timings and costs to be confirmed).  We hope this format will provide more playing opportunities for our academy players. As well as provide an opportunity for the girls to showcase what they have learned in the program against the best opposition in the area.

We have confirmed the attendance of New Zealand Football U17 National Coach, Alana Gunn for the first RTC day (and potentially a second day), where she will take players through the morning skill sessions.

If you are from outside Dunedin there will be an opportunity for you to trial for a team in your area. Trials for Regional Teams (Central Otago, Southland, and South Canterbury) will be announced once coaches have been appointed.

We look to provide girls in the Football South Federation with a varierty of opportunities.
